The Rocky Road

I can't think why I singled out this quote from Francois Crompton-Roberts featured in the latest "Quote -Unquote" Newsletter, but it struck a chord!

Q3963, ‘Does anyone know the origins of the (?) poster poem “The Animals of Drink” – “After one hour he is a monkey / After two hours he is an ass / After three hours he is a tiger / After four hours he is a sloth”?’ – ‘This reminds me of the description of the stages of inebriation as “Vin de singe, vin de lion, vin de mouton, vin de cochon” which is found in Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables, where it appears rather surprisingly on a china dish belonging to a nun. From my memories of a misspent youth it seems to correspond pretty well to reality!’ [Actually, it is on a series of goblets showing the stages of drunkenness.]
